What the work is

This is the right job when the furnace or air handler is sound and the cooling is finished. It is the wrong job when the two are the same age and the second one fails the winter after we leave, so we will tell you which situation you are in.

The indoor coil is replaced with the outdoor unit. That is not upselling; it is what makes the rated performance and the warranty real.

The question this job turns on is the age gap. If the furnace or air handler is within a few years of the cooling equipment, replacing only the cooling half means doing the disruption twice and paying the labor twice. If the heating side is genuinely newer, this is the cheaper and correct job.

There is one more check before we quote: the existing indoor equipment has to be able to move the airflow the new outdoor unit needs. Modern units are often less tolerant of restricted airflow than what they replace, and a blower that was adequate before can be the reason a new system underperforms.

  • How old is the indoor equipment, and what happens if it fails next year?
  • Is the coil matched, and is that on the quote?
  • Is the line set new or flushed?
  • How old is the furnace or air handler, honestly?
  • Can my existing blower move what this unit needs?

  • In Washington County the federal minimum for a new split-system air conditioner is 13.4 SEER2. The 14.3 figure quoted locally is the Southeast and Southwest number, and it does not apply in Utah.1
  • Utah is not in the Department of Energy's Southwest region. The regulation names that region as Arizona, California, Nevada and New Mexico. Anyone telling you a Southwest efficiency rule binds a St. George installation is repeating something the regulation does not say.1
  • Nothing in the federal refrigerant rule requires you to replace a working R-410A system. The restrictions apply to equipment being made, imported, sold or installed, not to a system already on your roof.1
  • Ask for the model numbers of the outdoor unit and the indoor coil, then look the pairing up in the AHRI Directory of Certified Product Performance. The rated SEER2, EER2 and HSPF2 are published there, on somebody else's site.1
