What the work is
A round knob needs grip and a twist. A lever needs neither. For anyone with arthritis, a weak hand, or full hands, that is the difference between a door that opens and one that does not.
It is a straightforward swap in most doors, and it is one of the cheapest changes on this whole list per unit of difference made.
We do the whole house at once because doing it one door at a time costs more in visits than in hardware.
What is included
- Removing the existing hardware
- Fitting levers to each door, keyed alike where you want that
- Adjusting latches and strikes so every door closes properly
- Taking the old hardware away
What is not
- Doors that need the bore enlarging or the door rehung, which we will show you and quote
- Smart or electronic locks
- Repairing damaged door edges or frames
Do the latches at the same time
Half the doors in a house that has settled need the strike adjusting. New hardware on a misaligned latch feels no better than old hardware did, and adjusting them while we are there costs nothing extra.
What to ask anyone quoting this, us included
- Will these fit the existing bores?
- Are you adjusting the latches too?
- Can they be keyed alike?
