What the work is
Gas work is sized, not estimated. The line has to carry the demand of everything on it at once, at the length it actually runs, and that is a calculation. Undersized gas is why a tankless heater cannot hold temperature and why a range never quite performs.
Every line we install or alter is pressure tested and inspected. A leak search on an existing line is a bubble test at the fittings and a pressure test on the section, and we show you what we find.
If you smell gas right now, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside. Do not call us first.
What is included
- Load calculation and sizing for everything on the line
- New line in the correct material for its location, with a shutoff at the appliance
- Pressure test and the permit inspection
- Bubble testing existing fittings on a leak search
- A written record of the test
What is not
- Appliance repair or connection beyond the shutoff and the connector
- Work on the utility's side of the meter
- Anything that should be done by the gas utility in an active leak
- Locating a buried line on someone else's property
The most common thing we find
A tankless water heater on a gas line that was sized for a tank. It works until two things run, and then it does not. If a tankless install is in your future, the gas calculation is part of that job and not an extra.
What to ask anyone quoting this, us included
- What is the calculated load, and what size line does it need?
- Was it pressure tested, and can I see the record?
- Is the permit in the price?
