What the work is

Walkways and steps are priced by difficulty rather than by area. A straight run of path is quick. A curved entry with three risers, a landing and a stone border takes a day and most of it is hand work with a small grinder.

Steps get a texture, always. A riser and a nosing are where a smooth coating does the most harm and a coarse broadcast does the most good, and we do not offer a choice about it on a step.

The masking is a real part of the job here, because walkways run right up against stone, stucco, planting beds and front doors. Expect the entry to be taped off and out of use for the day the work is done, and expect to be told which day that is in advance.

This is also the work where the edges show. Look at the finished line where the coating meets the stone, not at the middle of the path.

What is included

  • Hand grinding the edges, risers, nosings and curves
  • A textured finish on every step, as standard
  • Masking the adjoining stone, stucco, planting and doors
  • Closing the entry for the day and telling you beforehand
  • Cutting a clean termination line where the coating stops

What is not

  • A smooth finish on a step or a riser
  • Rebuilding a step that is broken or settling. Repair comes first and is its own quote
  • Keeping the front door in use while the entry is coated. It cannot be both

  • Concrete substrates must be mechanically prepared to remove cement laitance, existing coatings and curing compounds, and to achieve a profile that is clean, dry and free of dirt, grease and oil. Diamond grinders create that profile and remove high spots and coatings; shot blasting is described as the industry standard for surface preparation of concrete.1
